How it works

What mapping does to the audience

Mapping is not decoration and not a light show. It is a way of saying something so that people actually take it in.

The world has learned not to notice

People are worn out by the endless stream of content and no longer react to standard formats. Your idea risks going unseen — even when it stands in the middle of the city.

The same fortress with the first projection: the walls break open with light 02

We speak on the level of feeling

When a static object suddenly comes alive and starts a dialogue with the viewer, it seizes attention and pulls the audience fully inside what is happening.

The same fortress fully transformed by 3D mapping into a scene from the city's history 03

Your message becomes the spectacle

Your idea turns into a visual metaphor — and the audience sees and feels it exactly the way you do.

The impression keeps working for your image long after the show is over.

Fireworks impress. Mapping is remembered.

Who we work for

Four kinds of client, one question: what has to happen in this space?

The technology is the same. What changes is the job it has to do.

Tourism

Revenue per visitor: a reason to come, to stay longer and to spend more.

Cultural heritage

A monument that starts speaking — without a single fixing in its walls.

Sales launches

When a product or a building has to be remembered on the first evening.

Sport

Ice and grass are surfaces almost nobody can project onto. We can.

Whatever the brief, the result is the same kind of thing: a place people travel to see.

Geography

Fourteen countries, four regions, one team behind every project

We take a project end to end — concept, engineering, content and supervision. What changes from country to country is only the logistics. Sometimes we fly in our own crew and equipment. Sometimes we build with the teams already on site. Often it is a mix, assembled from our network of contractors across several countries — including markets closer to the client.

Not every country has enough projectors of the right class — and shipping five tonnes across the world is not always the right answer either. We hold our own resources and a network of partners on several continents, so the decision is made on what the project needs, never on what we happen to own.

Tell us where the project is

We will say plainly what can be done from here, what needs us on site, and roughly what it takes. A location and a date are enough to start.

We reply within one working day.

How we work

How the work runs on a project anywhere in the world

We tell clients honestly what can be done online and what cannot. A great deal of the work is remote — and where being on site genuinely matters, we travel easily, anywhere in the world.

01

Brief analysis and concept development

A 3D concept layout of an event hall with all multimedia zones
Remote or on site

It is entirely normal that you don't yet know exactly what you want — we analyse your objectives and your vision, then propose the options.

A straightforward project runs on measurements, photographs and a call. For a complex or high-stakes object we come and see the venue ourselves at this stage: our own measurements, and a conversation face to face.

02

Technical solution design

Projector placement calculation with an illumination heatmap
Remote or on site

Taking every technical, aesthetic and organisational factor into account, we calculate the optimal solution.

Drawings and specifications need no translation and can be produced from anywhere. But if we have not visited yet and the object calls for it, we travel now: some things are only caught when experienced engineers walk the site.

03

Content production

A content sketch: a museum facade and a rotunda drawn as a glowing mechanism
Remote

We'll show you the script, the sketches, still frames, animated scenes and finally the edited show. You can request changes at every stage.

Fully remote, wherever you are. Time zones only change the hour of the call.

04

Installation and calibration

Installation and calibration on site during a show
Always on site

Equipment and crew can be ours, a partner's from a market close to you, or local — whichever is more reliable and more sensible for the project.

Whichever it is, the work runs under our supervision, in person, on site.

Services

Four services. Take one, take two, take all of them.

A concept is worth having even if you build with someone else. Content is worth having even if the equipment is already in the room.

Concept development

Your idea stops being a description and becomes something you can look at — and show to other people.

What you getHide
Deliverables
  • A 3D model of the entire space with every multimedia installation
  • Still renders of the whole space
  • Video renders of each visitor journey
  • One or several technical solution schemes

For a small percentage of the eventual budget, your idea becomes a concrete digital prototype — something to study yourself and to show investors, funding bodies and a focus group from your audience.

BangkokWe designed the show for an IT company’s venue. They briefed a local team from our concept and built it themselves, at a fraction of the cost. That is what a concept is for.

Technical design

A full, honest picture of your options — from an integrator who is not selling you a particular brand.

What you getHide
Deliverables
  • A complete set of drawings for the space and every installation
  • Specifications for set fabrication and for equipment installation
  • A bill of the required equipment
  • A comparative analysis by configuration and by brand

Comparing quotes from different contractors gives you 30–50% of the picture, and a distorted one. Independent design lays every option side by side — premium, budget and the newer Chinese makes — with the pros and cons of each.

Mriya ResortTheir own specification allowed a single projector brand. Our design laid every option side by side and opened up more economical makes — without losing the show.

Content production

What you getHide
Deliverables
  • A scenario and a shot-by-shot script
  • Sketches and still frames for approval at every stage
  • The finished show, mapped to your surfaces

Delivery under our management

We assemble the whole project and run it — turnkey for permanent installations, or for the duration of your event.

What you getHide
How it is built
  • Equipment and crew: ours, a partner's from a market close to you, or local
  • Set fabrication, installation, calibration and launch

About

Why 22.12

22 December is the winter solstice — the shortest day, after which the light starts coming back. It is what mapping does: it takes darkness and an ordinary surface and turns them into something luminous.

Studio 22.12 founders at an awards ceremony, the trophy at the lower edge

“Our clients are often people in love with what they do — creating a product, building a brand, preserving historical memory, advancing science, or shaping a whole country's image on the world stage.

We help them share their ideas, their values and their way of seeing, so that others can see the world through their eyes.”

Sergey Ivanov and Katerina Ivanova, founders of Studio 22.12

FAQ

Questions clients ask first

Most of our clients are working with mapping for the first time. There are no stupid questions here.

Do you work in our country?

We have delivered projects in fourteen countries and travel for installation anywhere. Concept, design and content are produced remotely; only installation and calibration require us on site.

How much does a mapping show cost?

It depends on the surface, the number of projectors and the length of the show, so any price list would mislead you. Tell us the object and we will send comparable projects with their real budgets.

How long does a project take?

A concept takes from ten working days to a month, depending on the size of the space. Technical design — from ten working days for a straightforward object to two or three months for a complex one.

A show for an event is usually four to six weeks. If equipment has to cross a border, customs paperwork alone must be filed at least four weeks ahead, so plan for two months or more. On the scale of the Caracas forum, six months is realistic.

A permanent installation starts at four months, because that is the lead time for equipment built to order. It can be done in two or three if the projectors are standard models held in stock — but that is not the usual case.

We already have screens and equipment. Can you do only the content?

Yes. In Dushanbe and Tashkent the venues and the screens already existed — we produced the content without shipping a single crate.

Do you buy the equipment, or do we?

Either. We can supply directly, or write the specification so that you buy it yourself at the best price. Our design is not tied to one brand.

Can a concept be bought on its own?

Yes, and it is worth having even if you build with someone else. You receive a 3D model, renders, video walkthroughs and one or more technical schemes.

Shall we talk about how your idea will move people?

Write in any language you like — we answer in English, Spanish, Russian and French.

We reply within one working day.
